Hardwood flooring facts

  • Thickness determines the number of times either can be sanded. Solid ranges from ⅝ to ¾-inch and can be sanded up to five or six times. Engineered ranges from 5/16 to ¾-inch and can be sanded up for four or five times.

  • Many domestic and exotic species are available and the most popular ones are oak (red and white versions); maple; hickory; cherry and walnut.

  • Installation can be slightly different. With solid, there’s only one way: fit the pieces together in tongue and groove and then nail the edges. Engineered adds another technique: the pieces click together, similar to tongue and groove, but they form a mat that hovers over most existing subfloors. No nails and adhesives are necessary.

Choose engineered hardwood for less moisture worries

Did you know that there are two types of hardwood flooring? Most of us know about solid, but another, engineered hardwood flooring, is taking over a large share of the wood flooring industry. That is because it appeals to people who want both beauty and practicality.

Unlike solid, this is layered. At the top is a slice of genuine wood with all the knots, grains, swirls, and undertones. Underneath are at least three layers of genuine wood combined with a little resin, positioned in a crosswise layout. This gives it more stability and an increased ability to handle excess water. It doesn't shrink and contract to adjust to weather and it can be placed in a few higher-than-normal moisture areas where solid cannot.
